Around-the-world cruises offer travelers the ability to travel and explore different cities on different continents. Unlike plane travel, which is quite hectic, cruises often appeal to older travelers due to the slower pace of travel. Around-the-world cruises offer a chance to see the world in relative comfort.

From Quick Guide: World Cruises 101

    Identification

  1. This type of luxury cruise is quite expensive; around the world cruise prices range from $25,000 to $100,000, depending on the length and type of cruise. Typically, around the world cruises last anywhere from about 90 to 120 days. However, many people consider cruises to be a good value since it includes transportation, meals, entertainment and lodging costs all in one price. Some cruises also include shore excursions and additional activities in the total bill.
  2. Types

  3. Not every around the world cruise actually goes to every country. Many around-the-world cruises may focus on certain countries or areas like Asia, Europe, the Middle East or Latin America. Some cruise lines that feature around the world cruises include Cunard, Crystal World, Fred Olsen, Holland America, Princess, P&O Cruises, Regent, Seabourne and Voyages of Discovery.
  4. Features

  5. Every cruise line offers different menus, prices, services and amenities. You should pick a cruise line you are familiar with, since it's too long a trip to be unhappy with the service.
Pay attention to the list of ports and note how long you will be at sea without seeing land. Although most people who take around-the-world cruises are veterans at cruise travel, it's still a different experience to be on a cruise ship for nearly 3 months.
  6. Considerations

  7. Cruise ships often have specific etiquette, especially for meal times. During the daytime, informal breakfast or lunch meals are casual, so clothing like shorts and T-shirts are fine. However, evening events like formal and semi formal dinners may require more dressy clothing. Make sure to check with your cruise line so you know what to pack and ask about their laundry facilities. If you are flying, keep in mind any restrictions on luggage that your carrier may impose.
  8. Expert Insight

  9. Since these cruises are quite long, people reserve the most spacious cabins early for optimum comfort on the sea voyage. However, you may find steep discounts on the smaller, interior cabins as the cruise gets closer to its sail date. Some of the smaller cabins can even go for about $10,000 or maybe even less if the cruise is not crowded.
Budget travelers with less time and cash can book a smaller segment of a world cruise. For example, if you are interested in Asia, then you could book a week- or month-long cruise segment with specific port of calls. A travel agent who specializes in cruises can also help you get a great deal.
