Acne is a common skin disorder among adolescents. Acne can develop on any parts of your body where there are pores. Although there is no known cause, acne tends to develop when the pores in your skin become clogged and bacteria forms. Acne can be in the form of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, cysts or lumps.

From Quick Guide: Back Acne Basics

    Function

  1. Pores become clogged from the overproduction of a naturally produced oily substance in the body called sebum. The secretion of sebum from sebaceous glands occurs when certain hormones, known as androgens, are activated. The prevalence of acne among teenagers is attributed to the increased activity by androgens during puberty. Once pores become clogged, they block dead skin cells from being released from the body. This attracts bacteria, inflames the skin tissue and results in acne.
  2. Types

  3. The types of acne are differentiated by its location on the body. Acne that appears on any part of the face is simply called acne. Acne that is present on the back, shoulders, buttocks, chest or even upper arms is referred to as back acne, or bacne. Both types of acne involve the presence of clogged pores; however, the treatments for these conditions are different. This is due to the thickness of the skin. Since skin is not nearly as thick on one's face, stronger treatments are needed for back acne.
  4. Prevention/Solution

  5. For facial acne, there are a number of creams, cleansers, lotions and liquids that can be used. Products containing anywhere from .5% to 2% of salicylic acid are particularly effective because salicylic acid unclogs pores. Regular use of such products can help to reduce breakouts. The treatment of bacne requires a stronger substance, benzyol peroxide. Benzyol peroxide is used because it attacks the bacteria in clogged pores. If over-the-counter products are ineffective, you may want to consult with a dermatologist since prescription medication might be required.
  6. Considerations

  7. Since both acne and bacne involve clogged pores, the prevention of clogged pores can help to avoid either from occurring. Therefore, you should shower soon after engaging in any activity that caused significant sweating. You should also exfoliate weekly to help remove dead skin cells from the body. Avoiding tight fitting clothes and excessive makeup, as well as changing the linens on your bed regularly, are important since all of these things rub against your skin.
  8. Misconceptions

  9. Acne is not caused by poor hygiene. Failing to bathe or wash your face everyday does not cause acne. Also, scrubbing your skin hard when you do wash your face actually irritates it more. Also, diet is not a cause of acne. Eating certain foods like chocolate or greasy food will not result in acne. There is also no evidence that stress has any effect on acne.
