Remedies for Stretch Marks

Stretch marks, or scarring on the dermis (or middle) level of the skin, can cause one to be self-conscious. Not only do stretch marks appear after pregnancy, but gaining or losing weight, along with your genetic structure, may allow the skin to lose elasticity and collagen easily. In this modern day where there is a remedy for everything, even stretch marks can fade away if you're proactive and also experiment with various treatments such as laser procedures, dermabrasions and lotions.

    Identification

  1. Stretch marks look like scars and can be a shade of colors. When the skin is constantly being stretched and manipulated, it can leave a pigmented scar or stretch mark. These stretch marks may be red at first, appearing to be a scratch, but later turn into silvery lines that look more like veins or broken blood vessels.
  2. Types

  3. There are a few topical, over-the-counter creams that can be used to reduce stretch marks. Vitamin A derivatives like Retin-A or Tazorac have proven to be effective in reducing the appearance of stretch marks. These are topical creams that regenerate cells. These creams can be rubbed onto the inflicted areas at night. The skin will typically improve after four weeks, but it can take up to six to eight weeks to see results.
  4. Considerations

  5. There are also surgical methods, such as dermabrasions and chemical peels that can even out layers of the skin and allow the pigment to be consistent. These are typically more costly as they resurface the skin by peeling or sanding off the top layer of the skin to reveal the middle layer of the skin. These treatments also regenerate new cells.
  6. Prevention/Solution

  7. Diet and exercise also play a role in the skins elasticity and resistance to stretch marks. Drinking plenty of water, avoiding caffeine, and taking a multivitamin may wane off the onset or development of stretch marks. Eating foods rich in zinc, such as seafood, red meat and nuts, and consuming vitamins A and C, found in carrots and citrus fruits, can keep the epidermis healthy and strong.
  8. History

  9. Genetics also play a role in the potential for developing stretch marks. It is important to always keep the body hydrated and moisturized to avoid the onset of stretch marks or the multiplication of additional stretch marks.
  10. Potential

  11. Other potential aids in preventing stretch marks are shea butter and cocoa butter. Both are rich in vitamins, especially A and E.
