Features
-
The most common legitimate work at home typing jobs tend to consist of some sort of transcription or other administrative service. For example, many medical transcriptionists are able to work from home transcribing audio recordings for doctors' medical records. In addition, some publishers will hire transcriptionists to create print transcripts of recorded conference calls or audio events. Yet another example are agencies that hire people to work as virtual assistants, although this work may consist of other duties outside typing.
Benefits
-
The obvious benefits of a work at home typing job are those stated above: you don't have to commute. Work at home jobs are of high interest among mothers who stay at home with their children but wish to make some income on the side, as well as people who are introverted and prefer to avoid the office water cooler environment. In addition, there are a certain amount of cost savings in not having a commute. You don't have to have nice clothes to wear to the office every day, and you definitely spend less on gas every month.
Misconceptions
-
Benefits aside, however, the most common misconception about work at home typing jobs is that you can simply run out and find one without having special qualifications. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are not a huge number of work at home typing jobs out there, despite what some online articles might claim. There are jobs available in the areas stated above, such as medical transcription, but there are a limited number of positions available working in medical transcription--and to get these jobs, you will generally need to have some amount of formal training, such as an associate's degree and proven expertise in medical terminology. Most jobs will also go to individuals who already have documented experience. In addition, given that there are so many people out there who want to find jobs as virtual assistants or other work at home positions, there is huge competition for the available positions--and most will likely go to individuals who already have work experience in the field. It is not impossible to find a work at home typing job, but you should not expect it to be a quick solution to your money problems and you should not expect to find one without special training or qualifications.
Warning
-
As mentioned above, there is such a huge demand for work at home typing jobs that there are also a great deal of scams out there targeting people who hope to find these jobs. You should never have to pay to find a job. Any job that involves payment of a fee is most likely a scam. The only time you should ever pay money with respect to getting a work at home typing job is if you are attending a regionally accredited community college or vocational school in order to gain recognized training in medical transcription or administrative assisting. Watch out for online training programs that promise you a job at the conclusion of the training--many of these are also scams that will result in a certificate not recognized or valued by potential employers. The best move if you want to get training is to attend a local community college in your area.
Considerations
-
Even if everything works out and you are able to find a work at home job of some kind, there are some important considerations to keep in mind to be successful. If you are an at-home mom, for example, do not expect to be able to work with your children around. The end result will be you not being able to do a great job with either your work or your parenting. Instead, try to do your work while they are sleeping or hire a sitter to mind the children while you are working. In addition, note that some people may become lonely or feel isolated without the ability to interact with others on a daily basis, so if you have a high need for social interaction, working at home may not be the best choice for you.
