Adult Day Care Services

Adult day care services can be a blessing for senior citizens or adults with disabilities, as well as their families. Most communities provide several options for adult socialization and activity through adult day care services.
Adult day cares can provide many services that are beneficial for their members. What are the advantages of adult day care for you and your family member?

    Benefits

  1. Adult day care services are usually provided by the community in which you live. Some services are independently owned, or operated via franchise. They exist to provide families with a break from caring for a family member. Adult day care services also provide social interaction, exercise when appropriate for the individual, crafts and meals for senior citizens or other adults with disabilities or other medical problems that prohibit normal avenues of interaction in the community.
  2. Types

  3. Depending on the level of supervision needed, adult day care services range from those that provide medical interventions to those focused on social and recreational activities alone.
Many churches and nursing homes provide adult day care services, making it feasible for family members to work full time or part time, or simply enjoy a day out without worry that their loved one is safe.
There is a fee for services. Occasionally Medicaid might pay, depending on your state. A sliding scale based on income might be used by other facilities.
  4. Considerations

  5. Determine what sort of needs your family member has. If medical services are necessary, choose a facility that has a professional health care provider on staff.
Ask questions before you decide. You'll want to know what protocols are in place in case of emergency, in instances of aggression toward others (as sometimes happens when cognitive function declines), and what sort of facilities are available for toileting.
If the adult day care is too dull for your family member, choose a center that is a bit more lively--perhaps one that provides outings, or promotes more vigorous activities such as gardening and crafts on a daily basis.
Some day care centers will provide transport to doctor's appointments, and shuttle your family member to and from their service.
  6. Misconceptions

  7. Adult day care is not as expensive as many people think. Cost ranges from $31 per day to over $100 per day. The average cost is $60.
Encouraging a family member toward socialization is a positive step that can increase the length of time they're able to remain independent. Don't feel like you're pushing or that you are being neglectful. It's perfectly alright to take a break from care giving activities. In fact, it's mandatory for your own health and well-being. Eliminate any thoughts of guilt. Know that you are promoting the well-being of your family member as well as your own.
  8. Potential

  9. Adult day care services can bring renewed purpose to any individual who may have experienced recent declines in health or the loss of a spouse.
Discovering new friends and interests can be beneficial for treating depression and improving cognitive function. Social support provides a setting where others with similar life circumstances and health conditions can bond. Physical activity promotes better health.
