Thinning hair is a problem that plagues men and women alike. Though in many instances it's a problem that doesn't surface until later in life, for some, it occurs in their 30s and 40s. There are many factors that contribute to this problem, like heredity and genetics, but a poor diet may also lead to thinning hair and even hair loss. By making a conscious effort to maintain a steady diet, and getting the necessary amounts of certain "hair healthy" vitamins, thinning hair can be less of a problem.

  1. Vitamin A

    • Vitamin A is an antioxidant and helps produce healthy scalp sebum. This keeps the roots of the hair follicle healthy, which in turn helps to prevent hair loss. Vitamin A can be found in many green vegetables, like spinach and broccoli.

    Vitamin C

    • Because it actually helps maintain healthy hair and skin, Vitamin C is important to take every day. The best place to get Vitamin C is from citrus fruits, like oranges and grapefruits.

    Vitamin B3

    • Vitamin B3 helps to improve circulation in the scalp. By keeping the circulation up, it keeps the hair follicles healthy, so that none of them die and fall out, which then leads to thinning hair. Vitamin B3 is best found in a supplement, but can also be found in fish and wheat germ.

    Calcium & Magnesium

    • These two vitamins actually work together to boost hair growth. They give hair follicles the necessary nutrients to keep hair follicles healthy and to stimulate growth of new hair. These vitamins can be found in milk, green vegetables, fish and soybeans.

    Chromium

    • Chromium works to prevent hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Both of the these conditions lead to hair thinning or hair loss, so by preventing the conditions from occurring, both of those problems shouldn't be an issue. Hair should remain full and healthy.

    Potassium

    • Another vitamin that keeps hair healthy and promotes growth is potassium. By not including potassium in an everyday diet, gradual thinning of hair can occur. This vitamin is important and helps stimulate the follicles, which promote hair growth. Potassium can be found in bananas and avocados.
