History
Significance
-
The art of gunsmithing has been a necessity ever since the creation of firearms. In today's society, it is in even greater demand due to the increase of firearms among citizens.
-
Function
-
The purpose of gunsmith training is to prepare future gunsmiths with an education in firearms, enabling them to be a success at their trade. The courses generally taught include the safe handling and operation of firearms, gun design, instruction in the usage of all hand and mechanical tools needed to perform their tasks and how to appropriately maintain and clean a firearm. Courses also focus on areas of specialty like decoration, refinishing and custom designs. Most training is available at colleges, trade and technical schools. More recently, online courses are offered through accredited schools, and the training the student receives will prepare him for all types of employment.
Types
-
Once trained, a gunsmith can provide many types of services to his customers. He is now able to fix malfunctions, test the firearm for accuracy, clean and repair them, design his own firearm and customize a firearm to fit his client's needs. While most gunsmiths are self-employed, they can also find employment with a military or firearms club, service companies where firearms are used and with a manufacturer of firearms.
Considerations
-
Future gunsmiths should make sure that their chosen school offers the credentials required by employers. If opting for online courses, be sure that the school is accredited by the Education Standards Organization. It is also important to remember that self-employed gunsmiths will need to be eligible for and have the ability to acquire a Federal Firearms License.
Benefits
-
The great thing about gunsmith training is its versatility. The skills acquired in school also allows one to seek employment in areas where mechanical tools and instruments are designed. These skills are easily transferable to other jobs that offer comparable rates of pay and benefits. Currently, gunsmiths earn between $20,000 and $40,000 a year, and the job outlook is promising as it seems there will be an increase in demand for trained gunsmiths.
