Today's children face pressures that are sometimes incomprehensible to parents. Children in today's society have the pressure of fitting in with their peers, academic pressure and amidst all of this, they are trying to cope with the emotional and physical changes they are experiencing. For some children, the effects of all these will pass. For others, the problems make everyday life unbearable. This is when child therapy is needed.

    Significance

  1. A child therapist has the ability to reach children when their parents cannot. For children who are living in constant depression or experience thoughts of suicide, therapy is the one course of action that may be able to help them. If therapy is not sought at just the right moment, the child in need will not learn to cope with his situation, hence leading to an even more difficult life in the future.
  2. Function

  3. The purpose of child therapy is to provide a child in need with someone he can talk to, someone he feels understands what he is going through. In many cases, therapy is required because the child is unable to reach out to his parents for help. A therapist can offer coping methods designed to his particular situation and provide medication in severe cases where the child may be hallucinating or having thoughts of suicide. They also help educate the child's parents so that they may be of more support to their child and help him in an effective manner rather than causing more damage.
  4. Types

  5. There are various strategies used by child therapists to help get to the root of the child's problem and guide him through it. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is geared toward kids and teens who have problems coping with stress and are depressed. The therapist will provide the child with strategies for stress management, teach him relaxation techniques and aid him in turning negative thoughts into positive ones. Individual therapy is beneficial for children experiencing social problems and more severe depression by working one on one with the child. Family therapy is helpful when family members are not getting along and argue frequently. It helps the parents reestablish their role as the authority figures in the child's life.
  6. Features

  7. There are many different therapists available to help a child in need. What parents must do is make themselves knowledgeable when it come to the many titles these doctors hold so they can choose the best therapist for their child. Psychiatrists are actual medical doctors who have advanced training in psychotherapy. They are capable of prescribing prescription medications if necessary. Clinical psychologists are therapists with a doctorate degree and who specialize in the treatment of children and families. Lastly are clinical social workers. They specialize in clinical work, but their credentials vary from state to state.
  8. Considerations

  9. The choice to take a child to a therapist is major. Before choosing a doctor, it is imperative to shop around and ask questions until one is found who can help the child versus doing more damage. It is important to ask about their credentials, find out how long they have worked with children and how much experience they have overall. Be certain that the therapist chosen does not have a problem meeting with the parents separately. Most important is to not feel like a failure as a parent because your child needs therapy. Recognizing he needs help and getting it for him makes you a good parent.
