The grips are a key part of a golf club. Fitting your clubs with the proper grips works to provide both comfort and stability. Grips can be purchased in a variety of sizes, colors and materials.

    Size

  1. The first step to selecting a grip is to determine the size of the grip you are most comfortable using. Some golfers prefer a larger, softer grip and others prefer a thinner grip that allows for more feel of the club. Standard grips fit the hands of most golfers properly, allowing your fingers to touch your palm. Larger and smaller grips are available for people with larger or smaller hands.
  2. Types

  3. Grips can be made from a variety of materials. Most grips are made from rubber in order to ensure durability and protect against the elements, specifically water. Leather grips are also available, but synthetic materials are far more common and sensible. Grips are also made with a variety of textures and feels. Some golfers prefer a smoother grip and some prefer a textured grip that helps the hands cling to the club. Many rubber grips also incorporate cord into the material to help absorb wetness.
  4. Size

  5. To alter the size of the grip, tape is often wrapped around the club underneath the grip. The grips themselves come in fairly standardized sizes, but can easily be altered using the tape layering method.
  6. Considerations

  7. Compared with most golf equipment, the grip is relatively inexpensive. On the lower end, grips run around $3 per club. On the higher end, grips are priced at around $10 per club. The variety of grips to choose from is extensive. Numerous options of color, pattern, style and material are available. Grips also can include team logos or custom designs.
  8. Expert Insight

  9. As a general rule, grips should be replaced on a yearly basis. Most golf stores offer in-shop re-gripping services. However, shops also sell do-it-yourself grip kits with easy-to-follow instructions.
