Transcendental meditation began almost 50 years ago, through the Yogi, Maharishi Mahesh. This man comes from India and is known as one who has studied and practiced meditation techniques through various philosophies, such as the Vedic tradition. The Vedic ideals are similar to a philosophy of life, or religion, without setting a specific God head or figure to it.
The concept of transcendental meditation took these Vedic concepts and meditation techniques from this tradition and brought them to areas such as the United States, starting in San Francisco. As this concept grew, individuals became attracted to the techniques, as well as the scientific findings linked directly to this form of meditation. - The concept of transcendental meditation is to use basic meditation techniques to gain new perspective on life. This includes a message of simplicity of life, peacefulness and bliss. It is also stated that when one finds his inner self through this technique, than he is also able to find an unlimited amount of energy and happiness. As this continues to occur, individuals can be led into deeper techniques of the Vedic tradition that relate to enlightenment and finding peace in one's life.

Transcendental meditation uses basic techniques of meditation to work effectively. This starts by finding a comfortable space to sit. The sitting position should include a straight back, but should remain comfortable. This is combined with closing your eyes. The practice lasts for 20 minutes a day where there is complete calm in the environment and through the body.
When learning this technique, individuals are required to go to a school of learning to get the proper discipline. This is because the energy flow, as well as the specifics for mind concentration are needed to make this process complete. Since the purpose of meditation is to gain clarity of mind and focus, the training of the mind in these courses is to learn how to let go of thoughts and to relax the mind. The training and workshops offered show students how to do this effectively with practice. - More than any other type of meditation technique, transcendental meditation has been the technique used in combination with scientific studies. This includes over 600 studies that have shown that 20 minutes of meditation per day alters one's mind. Everything from monitoring brain wave movements to showing how individuals are able to overcome physical, mental and spiritual blocks have been shown through these findings. Most also state that their general lifestyle becomes better and more fluid with the practice.
- Like other forms of meditation, TM is a way of clearing out the mind and gaining focus and enlightenment through the mind. What makes TM different is simply the way that it is presented and practiced. Other forms have this same focus, but require differences such as deep breathing techniques, movements or guides. Trying different forms of meditation and finding the one that fits your lifestyle best can help you to achieve the goals that you desire most.
