Teachers lead busy days, from planning lessons to grading papers to contacting parents. Often, a teacher's work day begins before daylight and ends after dark. When considering a teaching career, look into the requirements for obtaining a license in your state. Every state requires different criteria. Also, decide what grade level or subject area you'd like to teach.

    • Teachers hold an important job. They have the responsibility of educating today's youth. Teachers impart their knowledge to students and help them gain the needed information to become productive members of society. Teachers must completely understand the subject which they teach in order to effectively communicate the knowledge to students. Teachers serve as positive role models for students, leading extra curricular activities, sporting teams or simply as a classroom teacher.

    Misconceptions

    • A common misconception is that the teacher's day ends at 3:30 when the bell rings to dismiss the students. In fact, most teachers' days begin before daylight. After the bell rings, a teacher has many other responsibilities. Teachers attend staff meetings, hold parent-teacher conferences, hold tutoring sessions for students, and lead student organizations or sporting teams. Some teachers attend professional development sessions, complete monitoring duties or attend department meetings. This is also a time when teachers create lesson plans, grade papers and prepare materials for upcoming classes. Often, a teacher's work day can run late into the evening and into the weekend. Teachers take papers home to grade in the evenings.

    Types

    • Teachers can train to teach elementary, middle or high school. An advanced degree is required to teach at the college or university level. Elementary teachers often teach in a self-contained classroom. That means they teach all subjects to the same students all day. Middle and high school teachers usually teach one or two subjects. The students rotate through the various classes throughout the day for middle and high school. Some teachers choose to teach elective classes like art, choir or theater. These teachers teach the same classes throughout the day with slight variations.

    • One of the main responsibilities of teachers is to create engaging, interactive lesson plans. These lesson plans are used to teach students the material. A teacher's job also entails holding parent-teacher conferences or contacting parents when necessary. Some teachers sponsor after school clubs, sporting events or offer tutorial sessions for students who need a little extra help. During the day, a teacher must also grade papers and input grades into computer systems to figure student averages. Teachers have many responsibilities to cover daily. Several times throughout the year teachers must attend continuing education sessions to improve their knowledge and abilities.

    • Every state requires different criteria for obtaining a teaching license. When considering a teaching career, it is best look into the requirements for becoming a teacher in your state. Another aspect to look into when considering a teaching career is reciprocity with other states, in case a move is in your future. Several states offer alternative certification as a means to achieving a teaching certificate. However, each state's requirements are different, and some states will not recognize an alternative certification as a valid teaching license.

      If you fall into this black hole of not being certified to teach somewhere, look into private schools. These schools follow their own criteria for teacher certification. These schools allow a little more flexibility in obtaining the proper teaching certification.
