Does Forgiving Others Helps Us?

Everybody has been wronged by another person at some time. At the time, you will probably feel betrayed, angry and perhaps a little sad as well. Nobody stays mad forever, though. Eventually, you will be ready to forgive the person who hurt you. Doing so will obviously make that person feel better since he or she will know that you're no longer so upset about the situation. Forgiving also helps us in numerous ways.

  1. Features

    • When you forgive somebody who hurt you, you are doing more than simply telling them that you're no longer mad. You are saying that you're ready to move on from the situation and that you don't want to bring it up again. Forgiving somebody doesn't erase the wrong that was done to you. It's your way of telling that person that everybody makes mistakes and these mistakes couldn't possibly ruin your relationship with that person.

    Benefits

    • The biggest benefit you get from forgiving somebody is the restoration of the normal relationship you had with that person. Once you forgive the person who wronged you, the two of you will be able to hang out and talk to one another again. Nothing could be as important as keeping your relationship intact.

Forgiveness also helps you build character. Forgiving somebody isn't always easy and doing so shows just how good a person and friend you can be.

Finally, forgiveness can also be spiritual. Most religions require followers to forgive anybody who has harmed them.

    Types

    • The easiest way to forgive somebody is to talk to that person about the situation. When you talk things out, you can explain why you were so upset. You can also hear that person's side of the story. Hopefully, that person will tell you that he or she is sorry that you were hurt by the event or situation. This will make forgiving much easier.

You don't always have to talk things out right away in order to forgive. Sometimes, a simple handshake or hug can be a sign that you have forgiven a person. A lot of guys don't feel comfortable with telling their buddies they were hurt. Therefore, they will forgive their friends on their own time.

    Misconceptions

    • Simply saying that you have forgiven somebody does not mean that you have actually done it. True forgiveness comes from your heart. Telling somebody you have forgiven them when you're not ready to do so can do more harm then good. If that person believes everything is fine when it actually isn't, you could end up in a later argument about that same situation.

    Expert Insight

    • Remember that there will come a time when you hurt somebody you care about. When this time comes, you will want to be forgiven for your mistake. Putting these things in the past is the only way that you will be able to sustain any friendship or closer relationship.

It's important to take some time before you speak with the person you need to forgive. By doing so, you can release your anger by yourself without saying something you may regret in the future. You can also mentally and emotionally forgive the person. Once you do, you will be able to speak with that person and forgive him or her in person.
