About Watermelon Vodka
Watermelon vodka is a delicious fruit-infused alcohol that is sold by liquor manufacturers. It is also possible to make watermelon vodka at home, using fresh watermelon and a bottle of your favorite vodka. Because of the large size of the watermelon, instead of taking chunks of watermelon and infusing them in the bottle of vodka, it is possible to infuse the entire bottle of vodka by pouring it into a slightly hollowed watermelon. Watermelon vodka is a spring or summer treat that is perfect for barbecues, picnics and parties. Does this Spark an idea?

History
-
Smirnoff is a British company, well-known for their vodka and malt beverage, called Smirnoff Ice. In the '90s, Smirnoff introduced a malt beverage in the U.K. that was fruit-flavored. Soon, Smirnoff was associated with creating alcoholic beverages that were high in alcohol content, but without the taste of alcohol. Flavored vodkas like Raspberry, Citrus, Strawberry, Cranberry and Watermelon were introduced and became immediately popular in both England and the United States.
Types
-
Companies besides Smirnoff that currently make watermelon-infused vodka include Three Olives and Burnett's. Although Smirnoff is by far the most popular brand, Burnett's and Three Olives are known for their good value. If you can't find watermelon vodka sold in your area, try your hand at making it homemade.

Considerations
-
Making homemade watermelon vodka takes less time than most infusions because watermelons are so large. Instead of placing slices of watermelon inside your vodka bottle, try cutting a hole in the watermelon and pouring the vodka of your choice inside. Plug the hole back up and place the watermelon in the refrigerator for two days. Pour vodka through a strainer to remove any bits of watermelon that get left behind, and garnish with a slice of the watermelon, which is edible and still contains a good amount of vodka.
Significance
-
Watermelon vodka has become popular in bars over the last few years. It is featured as the alcohol in several mixed drinks, including the Brooklyn Hippie, the Summertime Sweet Lemonade, the Watermelon Mist, the Watermelon Martini, the Water Bomb, the Watermelon Jolly Rancher, the Misslisious and the Fruit Bowl. Try mixing a fruit juice like cranberry juice or pomegranate juice into a shot of watermelon vodka to make watermelon mixed drinks at home.
Warning
-
Do not purchase or consume watermelon vodka if you are under 21. Exercise caution and responsibility when drinking watermelon vodka. If you are allergic to melon, do not consume watermelon vodka. If you are making your own vodka watermelon, keep in mind that the watermelon will ferment with time and create a higher alcohol content. Do not leave vodka-infused watermelon in an area where children are present.
