About Fig Vodka

Since the beginning of Absolut's advertising campaign promoting flavored vodkas, sipping these designer liquors has become a trendy and delicious pastime. However, as with any other innovation-based food, aficionados are always looking for the next "flavor of the month." Fig vodka is a fairly recent innovation that sounds like it might taste peculiar, but in reality it is an extremely interesting and enjoyable drinking experience. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. History

    • Most horticultural historians believe that the fig tree (or ficus) originated in Asia. However, these trees now flourish almost everywhere in the world in tropical and semi-tropical regions. Figs are the fruit of this tree, and they tend to have a nutty, semi-sweet flavor.

    Features

    • Fig vodka is 40 proof, which is strong but not too strong. It is a great drink for shots because of the sweet, natural flavor of the vodka. Most people prefer fig vodka straight or on ice rather than mixed with other beverages.

    Types

    • Fig vodka is only made by a few companies currently, although the success of the product does mean that more companies will probably join the ranks soon. Kleiner Feigling makes a fig vodka, as does VanGogh. These vodkas are fairly similar in flavor and proof, but the Van Gogh version is more often used as a mixer than the Kleiner Feigling.

    Misconceptions

    • This is a fresh fig. The vodka retains a great deal of this flavor.

Most people do not consume a lot of figs, therefore many shy away from fig vodka because they expect it to taste like fig newtons, a popular childhood snack that generally does not translate into adulthood. In fact, the taste is nothing like fig newtons, but tastes much more reminiscent of fresh figs. Even if you do not usually enjoy drinking vodka straight, you may wish to try this vodka because the flavor is extremely interesting.

    Effects

    • Because fig vodka has a low proof for vodkas and other liquor drinks, it can be a good shot drink. Doing a round of fig vodka shots can actually slow consumption down without putting a damper on the party itself. Obviously, straight liquor in any form is not something to be messed with, and generally flavored vodkas should be savored rather than pounded.

    Warning

    • Whenever you are drinking alcohol, you must be aware of your surroundings and the ramifications of your actions. Never over-imbibe and do not ever drive after drinking. Make sure that if you are planning to drink heavily, you do so with friends who can help you stay safe.
