About 10-Year Anniversaries
A 10-year anniversary is an acknowledgment that a decade has passed since an event originally occurred. This might be a time of celebration or reverence.

Identification
-
The term "anniversary" comes from the Latin: anniversarius, which means "year and to return" or returning year. We celebrate or acknowledge many different anniversaries each year, such as those for birth or death. The 10th anniversary can also be referred to as the "decennial."
Types
-
Typically the term 10-year anniversary evokes the idea of a wedding anniversary. Over the years customs have dictated what types of wedding anniversary gifts to give, depending on the year. Traditionally silver is given for the 25th anniversary and gold for the 50th. For the 10th anniversary, the traditional gift is tin or aluminum. Diamonds are also given on 10th anniversaries. While we might give different types of gifts for the year of the wedding anniversary, there are other types of anniversaries that may be less traditionally observed. This might be the 10th anniversary on a particular job, or the 10th anniversary of a business opening.

Features
-
A 10-year anniversary is considered a milestone, as it marks one decade. For a business it might be a significant number, and be celebrated with sales promotions and heavy advertising. As a wedding anniversary, it is certainly less impressive than the 25th, yet still noteworthy. Anniversaries can be acknowledged by engraved gifts, to memorialize the event, or special parties. Some organizations have specific rules for commemorating a member's 10-year anniversary with the organization.
Function
-
The primary function of an anniversary is to pay tribute. Noting the anniversary of someone's death, such as John F. Kennedy on November 22, is a way for Americans to remember and pay tribute to the man's life and accomplishments. When we celebrate a wedding anniversary, such as the 10th, we are celebrating the married couple's union. This can be done by way of gifts, cards or a party.
History
-
During the medieval times married couples did not celebrate annual wedding anniversaries, but rather great milestones such as the 25th or 50th anniversary. Considering the life expectancy in those days, few were celebrated. By the 1930s other milestone wedding anniversaries were added to the list, including the 10th anniversary. Other anniversaries, such as birthdays, are not observed by all religions or cultures by the way of gifts or celebrations.
