It is not nearly as hard on the joints as jogging, and many people with arthritis and knee problems can strengthen and fortify their muscles and joints with a carefully designed exercise cycling regimen.     • As gas prices rise and people everywhere start to think about conserving energy and fuel, exercise cycling is gaining new attention and enthusiastic supporters. Many cities already provide monetary incentives for people who bike to work instead of driving. This helps everyone with asthma and allergies as well, because cycling increases lung capacity while it decreases air pollution.

    Time Frame

    • If you have never cycled before, then you can expect some soreness in your buttocks and legs after your first trip--even if it is on a stationary bike. However, by sticking with it for as little as a week, you will find that your energy levels have increased and your muscles are no longer sore. Over time, you will be able to ride farther and farther, until you realize that as long as you have your bike, there is just no stopping you.
