The dissertation committee is formed in accordance to the specific program requirements. It's usually made up the student's advisor and several committee members. After the prospectus is done and the committee is formed, the dissertation needs to get approved by all necessary parties. This can take some time, because it has to be collectively agreed upon. Following the approval, a student must pass the oral defense examination. This is also referred to as the thesis defense. During this stage, the committee (and perhaps others including department chairs) acts as a jury; asking the student about the results, process and findings that occurred during their dissertation proceedings.
