What is a Dissertation?

A dissertation is a paper that presents and develops an author's study and subsequent conclusions regarding a specific topic.

  1. Significance

    • A dissertation is often referred to as a thesis. It's a work that promotes a point of analysis, which is achieved through a substantial amount of research. Dissertations are a major part of various degree programs and certifications. Candidates of these programs are required to complete their dissertation and have it approved by their dissertation committee.

    Features

    • In general, a dissertation includes a title page, abstract, table of contents, the body and a comprehensive bibliography. The specific length and style requirements of a dissertation may vary according to the area in which it's being written. For example, if the dissertation was science based, it may have additional contents, including resources and methods, findings, discussion, tables and graphs, findings and appendices.

    Effects

    • The dissertation process can be rather extensive. First, a student completes a prospectus and must obtain a thesis committee. The prospectus includes a proposal of the idea (what he intends to write) and how it fits into a specific field of study. It may be an inquiry into a subject along with a theory of the results that will be found. The purpose of the prospectus is to explain the anticipated methodology, the vital details, statistics and data that will be used to determine them and the rationale behind the project. In essence, the prospectus serves as a blueprint of sorts, illustrating what one is setting out to do and why their findings will prove to be significant

    Function

    • The dissertation committee is formed in accordance to the specific program requirements. It's usually made up the student's advisor and several committee members. The committee's job is to supervise the student's dissertation, read and help edit it, recommend changes and support her in the thesis defense. A student usually has the opportunity to choose members of the committee; however, the members must hold the proper credentials within the field (such as a relevant Ph.D.).

    Effects

    • After the prospectus is done and the committee is formed, the dissertation needs to get approved by all necessary parties. This can take some time, because it has to be collectively agreed upon. Following the approval, a student must pass the oral defense examination. This is also referred to as the thesis defense. During this stage, the committee (and perhaps others including department chairs) acts as a jury; asking the student about the results, process and findings that occurred during their dissertation proceedings.

    Expert Insight

    • The dissertation writing process includes five key steps. The first is identifying and describing what you are setting out to do. This also calls for an organization of the works that will be used as your sources and references. The next step is to specify and delineate the research topic. The purpose and importance of your dissertation within its realm has to be clear. Next is setting up all of your information so it allows you to classify and comprehend it in a way that is most effective to the ultimate objective. Step four is the interpretation of the materials that were accumulated in the previous step. The final step is the completion and presentation of the finished product.
