Swim masks are also referred to as swim goggles. Both swim masks and swim goggles cover the eyes and make it possible to see under water without causing damage or discomfort to the eyes. They are very useful for both beginning and experienced swimmers and generally required for anyone that practices or competes in swimming sports. Swim masks differ from snorkel masks because they do not cover the nose area.

From Quick Guide: Introduction to Swim Suits

    Function

  1. Swim masks shield the eyes from chlorine, salt water, bacteria and general discomfort. They allow people to see clearly underwater and explore their surroundings. Swim goggles also make it possible for swimmers to move through the water swiftly during competition or practice. For young children, wearing swim goggles makes learning to go under the water or diving more comfortable and helps them feel more in control because they will be able to see what they are doing when learning new skills.
  2. Types

  3. The size and shape of swim mask lenses may vary. Some may be large, while others cover just the eye and not much more. Silicone is generally used as a sealant, and this will vary in usage as well. Swim masks come in different colors with many different shades of lenses. The color of the lens will not impact visibility, but is chosen generally for aesthetic purposes. There are also expensive brands that tend to be of higher quality and lower priced brands that may not be of the highest quality, but will be useful for a short period of time.
  4. Features

  5. Prescription Swim Mask

    Prescription Swim Mask
Some swim masks can be made to fit your prescription eyeglass needs. One or both lenses can be designed with a prescription lens, or each lens can be a different strength, to give you the best clarity possible when swimming. These will have to be ordered and designed through a company that specializes in this type of product and likely through a catalog or online order.
  6. Size

  7. Most masks are one-size-fits-all for children or adults. They can be adjusted to fit most head sizes and will fit comfortably on most swimmers. The most important size aspect of a swim mask is the size of the lens. Individual preferences will vary, and some swimmers find a small lens is comfortable, while others prefer a larger lens, with higher visibility and less pressure around the eye area.
  8. Prevention/Solution

  9. Anti-fog Spray

    Anti-fog Spray
Purchase anti-fog spray to prevent fog from forming in the swim mask and obstructing visibility. If you cannot find anti-fog spray, use baby shampoo instead by rubbing the inside of the mask with a drop or two of shampoo and then rinsing clear. After every swim, be sure to rinse and dry the swim mask well, which will help preserve the mask and keep it clear during future swims.
  10. Warning

  11. Do not wear a swim mask that has cracks or breaks in the lens. This could be harmful to your eyes and cause permanent damage as the eye can be cut by the plastic. Furthermore, do not let young children play with or use swim masks without supervision. Make sure that children are wearing the swim mask properly and the adjustment for the head size is done adequately. Refrain from spitting in a mask to clear it. Spitting in a mask is not hygienic and unnecessary as there are other options available, such as anti fog spray or baby shampoo.
