Packing Tips for Women

Sometimes women have the hardest time deciding what to pack when going on a trip, whether for business or pleasure. Much depends on the destination and the duration. There are a number of general recommendations to follow. Whether you are organized and travel often or someone who is not comfortable with what to take along and seldom travels, these basic guidelines will help get you started. You can implement the suggestions with your own personal preferences and items you feel must be taken along. Women want to be surrounded with familiar and comfortable items when traveling without packing their entire wardrobe.

  1. Significance

    • The significance of packing properly is fundamental to the enjoyment of any trip. Packing for a week-long cruise may include formal wear as well as casual and recreational clothing. Packing for a business trip may require professional attire that can pass for evening wear. Trips that will focus on the outdoors (such as hiking and camping) mean that clothes need to be practical, functional, manufactured for a variety of weather, and serve a multitude of functions. In addition to clothing, women may need to pack accessories, health items, medicines and prescriptions, cosmetics, soaps, and incidentals.

    Function

    • Because of limitations on checked baggage, women must pack carefully and thoughtfully. Interchangeable outfits made of wrinkle-free fabrics in coordinating colors is paramount. Items that can be easily washed for overnight drying are another consideration of function. The same applies to accessories such as jewelry, scarves, and hair ornaments.

    Geography

    • Geography and destination of a trip as well as time year will dictate whether to pack warm, heavy clothing or cool, spring styles. Recreational activities one expects to participate in will also influence the type of clothing to pack. If you plan to spend most of your time on the beach, swimwear, shorts, and light shirts will rule. However, if you plan to spend most your time indoors, then slacks, light jackets, or casual clothing will dominate what goes into your suitcase. Therefore, geography plays a major role in type and number of items to pack.

    Warning

    • If possible, never pack good or expensive jewelry. Stick to costume jewelry and there are many that are of high quality that, if lost or stolen, you won't be terribly upset about it. Minimal is also the best rule to follow when it comes to jewelry. Depending on your destination, you may be able to shop and purchase jewelry created by area artists. This is something that will have sentimental value and can be added to your collection of jewelry, to be worn in remembrance of the trip or occasion. Another warning: never take off your good jewelry (should you bring it) at a beauty salon or other location. Never trust anyone with your jewelry.

    Expert Insight

    • The less you have to pack, the less you have to worry about. You can always purchase clothing, accessories, and incidentals where you may travel. You can also pack a second carry-on bag in the event you run out of room to pack all those gifts, souvenirs, books, or clothing for your return home. Wear what you can if it doesn't fit into the suitcase. Another consideration is to ship anything home through a Pack 'n Mail service that may be available at your destination. Focus on interchangeable clothing, pack minimally, and you'll travel lighter and happier.
