Venice is known for being the city mainly built on water. The Adriatic Sea and its subsidiaries flow throughout the city, making boats one of the main sources of transportation throughout the city.

Time Frame

There are so many landmarks and architectural structures to see and visit while in Venice, especially if one is a tourist to the area. For the larger more pristine structures where one would be able to tour the interior as well as the grounds, such as St. Marks Basilica, St Marks Campanile, Hall of the inquisitors, Doge's Palace and the Senate Hall, one should allow up to two to three hours each for the complete tour of each facility. For sightseeing the landscape and famous landmarks throughout Venice such as The Rialto Bridge, The Bridge of Sighs, St. Marks Square, Giant's Stairway, Inner Court's Doge's Palace, The Arsenal and the historical Prison's Courtyard, many of these sights are by private tour only but some can be seen and experienced by simply walking though. Allow up to one to two hours for each location.

Size

Venice has a population of over 271,000 people and is the capital of the region of Veneto, in Italy. Known also as the city of water, Venice is compromised of 118 small marshy islands that are held together by bridges, making transportation viable. Venice is one of the most sizable cities in the world that is built on mainly on water or marsh alone, structures in Venice are supported by underwater wooden stabilizers that are rot free due to the lack of oxygen that likes under the water. Venice also has one of the areas highest populations of bridges with over 400 total.

Geography

Venice is located on the continent of Europe and has an average temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer months and around 42 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter months, making it a well sought after destination for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts. Venice is built on an archipelago of islands and is formed by 150 canals that are connected by bridges and passed over on foot or underneath by boats called Gondolas. Venice is a typically flat terrain with a few dipping valleys and grass lands throughout the country side.
