About Chinese Gender Prediction

Throughout history, China has been a typically male-dominated society, where parents hope for the birth of a male child and dread the birth of a female.
While this pride in the male child is frequently seen in countries across the world, the Chinese have created the art of gender prediction.
This allows parents to predict the sex of their child by using a chart; we're going to look at how the chart works and why it is so popular.

  1. Significance

    • Although the rights of women in China have improved drastically across the past generations, there are even now signs of the ages-old ideas that there are fundamental differences in the potential and capabilities of men and women.
Even the yin/yang symbol represents the female as dark and yielding, and the male as aggressive, bright and dominant. While the yin/yang also signifies that one is not complete without the other, it also signifies the traits that are more valued in male children.
The need for a male heir is evident not just in the East, but throughout Western Europe as well. With that in mind, it's not surprising that a way to pre-determine the sex of a child is so popular.

    Function

    • The system for Chinese gender prediction is a chart. On one side of the chart is a series of dates corresponding to the month in which the child is conceived. On the other axis is a list of ages, for the age of the mother during conception. Matching the month of conception with the mother's age leads to a square in the graph that is either blue or pink, indicating whether the baby will be a boy or a girl.
Years of studies have found that the chart is 93 percent accurate.

    Considerations

    • In order to make the chart more accurate, the age of the mother needs to be calculated based not on the Western calendar, but on the Chinese lunar calendar. Those whose birthdays fall between February 21 and December 31 of the Gregorian calendar need to add one year to their age. Therefore, a 25-year-old mother born in July would use the chart as though she were 26.

    History

    • The gender prediction chart is thought to be over more than seven centuries old and thought to have been developed by a scholar in the Song Dynasty. While the history of the chart isn't certain, it's said to have been discovered in an unspecified tomb somewhere in China. Housed in the Beijing Electronic Science and Technology Institute is what is thought to be the original copy of the document.

    Warning

    • While the Chinese Gender Prediction chart has been shown to be 93 percent accurate, it still isn't foolproof and should not be used to plan a pregnancy with the idea that it 100 percent accurate.
