Before the invention of toothpaste, people kept their mouths clean by making a homemade paste from common household items. A daily rubbing of the paste on their teeth helped keep them clean, white and less prone to cavities. Simply measure out 1 tbsp. of baking soda. Place it in a small, wide-mouthed bowl. Pour enough hydrogen peroxide in the bowl to make a thick paste. Stir the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide with a spoon until a smooth paste forms. Only mix up enough paste for one cleaning at a time.
Function
-
Place a dampened toothbrush in the paste and scoop up a small portion. Brush the paste on your teeth as you would a toothpaste. Be sure to clean not only the visible part of your teeth, but also reach back to all the hidden areas for a more through cleaning. The paste may fizz and bubble as it is scrubbed into your teeth. The combination of ingredients is removing food particles, plaque and debris from your teeth. Use the entire bowl for one session of brushing.

Effects
-
Depending on the amount of teeth discoloration, this process may be used several times, with increasingly more visible results after each application. The teeth will look whiter after each subsequent use of the homemade paste.
Time Frame
-
You will notice a whitening of the teeth after just two applications. If you apply the paste once in the morning and again in the evening, you will see results after the first day of use. Remember to also brush with regular toothpaste in addition to the teeth whitening paste made of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.
Benefits
-
A whiter, cleaner smile can give you more confidence. You will smile more in pictures and be less conscious of your overall appearance. You'll also be smiling because you will save a lot of money by not getting your teeth professionally whitened, which can cost up to $1,000 or more.
