Expectations of Becoming a Photographer
Photography is both an exciting and practical profession. When you choose the career path of becoming a photographer, you can satisfy both your desire to create artistically as well as potentially make a fulfilling, reliable and enjoyable living. There are many different types of photography to go into, from fashion photography to medical photography and everything else under the sun. If you are considering becoming a photographer as a career, here are some of the things you should anticipate.

Types
-
There are many types of photography fields. If you are considering a career in photography, whether you're interested in nature or sports, there is surely something out there that could suit your styles and preferences. Some of the many photography fields include landscape, photojournalism, still life photography, culinary photography, advertising, fashion, wildlife, portrait and conceptual. You are not limited to any specific subdivisions. If you are fascinated by food, then culinary photography would be a suitable profession for you. If you like going to gatherings and capturing people at the happiest moments of their lives, then wedding and party photography is suitable for you. Do your research before you decide which field you would like to focus on.
Expert Insight

These days, it's very hard to get your photography noticed with all of the competition out there, but there are a few ways to get your name around. It's important to make a website on the Internet that displays a portfolio of your past works. Registering your own domain is a good idea, but it also is possible to sign up for a MySpace page (myspace.com) and make a page depicting your work that way as well. Make sure you display your finest work possible, especially focusing on the fields in which you would like to get work. For example, if your objective is to do wedding photography, try to post a few of your finest event photographs. Also, be sure that your contact information (telephone number and email address) is easy to find on your website, so that potential employers can get in touch with you.

Potential
-
The median salary for photographers in the United States is a little over $50,000 a year. However, there is no set rule for what kind of money photographers should make. You could get lucky and get a one in a million job that pays you $50,000 for a few days of work alone. However, it is not suggested that you enter the photography field if you want a lot of money off the bat, as it could take a few years to build up your reputation and client base. One good thing about photography is that it is very rewarding if you do succeed, as many successful photographers can make six-figure salaries annually.
Geography
-
You can live anywhere in the world and be a photographer. It doesn't even matter if where you live has any people, as you could focus on taking pictures of the night time sky and mountain ranges if you desire. However, you have to consider what kind of photography field you're going into and whether it is possible to pursue that field where you are currently residing. For example, if you live in the middle of a rural area in Kentucky, fashion and glamor photography is likely not going to be very realistic, unless you plan on commuting via airplane half the time. On the other end of the spectrum, if you live in the middle of New York City and you'd like to focus on nature and landscape photography, that isn't going to be very easy either. Consider your surroundings when deciding what type of field you'd like to enter.
Benefits
-
One of the biggest benefits to pursuing a career in the photography field is the ability to (usually) make your own schedule. Photographers generally are not bound to a strict 9-to-5 schedule. Most photographers work on a freelancing basis and have the freedom and ability to choose assignments as they like. If you would like to spend all of a certain month working and would like to set aside the next month entirely free, you can do that. If you would like to work seven days a week instead of a mere five days like most, you can do that as well.
