What is the History of the Gevalia Coffee Company?

Gevalia Kaffe, maker of amazingly delicious European coffees, has been making mornings lovely for coffee connoisseurs for generations. What is its secret to success? Does this Spark an idea?

  1. History

    • Gevalia, pronounced "Juh-vol-ya," began it's inception in 1853 in a small Sweedish seaport. There, Victor Engwall founded a company that would search throughout the world for coffee varieties that Europeans had yet to have the chance to taste and discover. As coffee became more and more important in Sweden, Engwall's customers were becoming obsessed with finding new and different coffees. Engwall began experimenting with different combinations of beans and with roasting techniques. He was trying to develop the perfect cup of coffee.

    Significance

    • For many years, Gevalia searched for that perfect combination of beans. During his quest, the King of Sweden, Gustav, was taking a trip through the Baltic. He visited the tiny port town of Gavle, where Engwall was doing his work. The king was so impressed by the taste of the coffee, he appointed Gevalia as the coffee purveyor to the Royal Court.

    Geography

    • The Engwall sons and grandsons have carried on the family tradition for years. In fact, they are still running the company today. The coffee is still made in the tiny Swedish seaport of Gavle.

    Effects

    • At the Gevalia company today, a master taster makes sure that only the best coffee beans are used in the Gevalia coffee. Experts in roasting and blending have been hired to ensure that only the best coffees possible leave the factory.

    Expert Insight

    • Gevalia coffee was introduced into the United States in 1983. It has since been established as one of the top premium coffees in the United States. The Gevalia company now has loyal customers not only in Europe, but all over the world.
