What to Do at Slumber Parties
Slumber parties, also known as pajama parties or sleepovers, are fun for everyone. They are most popular among grammar school and high school girls, but even college graduates can have them. Boys may have slumber parties as well, but this is rare. There are much more to slumber parties than pillow fights and Truth or Dare, though. The best slumber parties are those where you can just be yourself.

Features
-
Slumber parties are often arranged to celebrate a holiday or a special occasion, such as a birthday. However, they are also planned just for the fun of it. Usually, three or more girls are invited to spend the night at someone's house. They bring their pajamas, as well as sleeping bags and pillows, to lie on the floor of the hostess's bedroom or living room.
Function
-
The purpose of slumber parties is to stay up late and spend time getting to know each other better. Although time may be spent watching movies or playing video games, the majority of the night is spent sharing personal stories, gossiping, telling secrets and talking about boys, of course. Sometimes, experimentation with makeup or hair color are done as well. Junk food such as potato chips, cookies, cake, candy and ice cream often accompany these gatherings. Sometimes takeout food, such as pizza or Chinese food, is ordered.

Significance
-
Slumber parties are special because they allow friends to communicate with each other without distractions or interruptions. The night hours feel almost limitless and there is an intimate silence that makes it easier to share thoughts with others. Slumber parties may be the defining moment of friendships.
Effects
-
Slumber parties can strengthen the bond of existing friendships. Sharing, talking, laughing and just spending time together are also therapeutic. Slumber parties can also result in the establishment of new relationships. However, on the negative side, it is possible that the revealing of secrets or spreading of gossip damages or destroys existing friendships.
Considerations
-
When planning a slumber party, consider who you plan on inviting. Remember, the success of the party is determined by the relationship among those invited. No more than five or six should attend. Even if there is enough space for eight sleeping bags on the living room carpet, smaller groups are more intimate.
