About Lemuria

Ancient civilizations have fascinated people for centuries. Throughout history, various cultures have passed down stories of great civilizations suddenly destroyed by a cataclysm and sinking beneath the waters. But are the stories of such mysterious lands just stories or did they really exist?

    1. History

      • Lemuria is the name given to an ancient civilization that supposedly existed around or prior to the time of the legendary continent of Atlantis. The location of Lemuria was believed to be in the Southern Pacific, between North America and Asia/Australia. Although the accounts differ, the results were the same--Lemuria sank beneath the ocean due to a devastating cataclysm.

      Features

      • Lemuria, so named for its abundant lemurs, was also referred to as Pacifica. Lemuria was considered a paradise land filled with lush trees, plants, fruits and vegetation where the inhabitants lived in harmony with nature. According to legend, as one piece of fruit was picked another would immediately appear in its place so that there was always an abundant supply. Some believe that Lemuria may have been the location of the biblical Garden of Eden.

      Significance

      • The people of Lemuria were supposed to be very spiritual. It is said they were psychic individuals who possessed telepathic ability and were able to walk through physical objects. These people were not war-like as the Atlanteans were, but were more concerned with spiritual pursuits and the evolution of their spiritual nature. Some people believe that there were survivors of Lemuria just as some belive there were survivors of Atlantis. Even now, there are those who believe that Lemurians still exist living in tunnels beneath Mount Shasta in California.

      Geography

      • If Lemuria did exist, where was its location? Although legend tells us that the lost land of Lemuria was located in the Pacific, its exact location remains a mystery, if it existed at all. There have been several locations proposed for the original location of Lemuria. It is believed that Lemuria may have existed in the Mediterranean. Some supporters of Lemuria believe it may have existed in the Indian Ocean rather than the Pacific. One popular belief is that Easter Island and the Hawaiian islands are remnants of Lemuria.

      Considerations

      • The lost land of Mu is often spoken of in association with Lemuria. In some references it seems that Mu and Lemuria are one and the same, but in others it appears that they are two different lands. Lemuria has also been compared to Hyperborea, another mythical land. Mu (Lemuria) was supposedly inhabited by a reptilian race of beings. Whether these beings are the same beings that are highly spiritual remains somewhat unclear. Some believe that the inhabitants of Lemuria who survived its destruction founded the Mayan civilization.

      Theories/Speculation

      • It is thought that Lemuria sank beneath the ocean after suffering violent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. The sinking of Lemuria may have resulted from a shifting of the earth's poles or some other unknown cataclysmic event. Although there is no concrete evidence of the existence of Lemuria, believers argue that there is scientific evidence of a once sunken land mass in the Pacific. Underwater structures in the Indian and Pacific oceans may be the vestiges of the lost land of Lemuria. The debate continues over whether these structures are man-made or natural structures. Perhaps someday they will be proven to be the remnants of a lost land once believed to be only the product of myth and legend.
