Identification
-
Black roses do not occur naturally, and growers are still working to cultivate one. The type of flower which rose growers call a black rose is actually a very dark red color, whose buds may look black. Some black-red roses which can be purchased from florists are called "Black Magic," "Black Baccara," and "Ruby Celebration."
History
-
The original black rose was named Nigrette and was developed by a German man named Max Krause in the 1930s. The original plantings of this rose are part of the largest rose collection in the world, located at the Europa-Rosarium in Sangerhausen, Germany. The Nigrette rose is still the darkest variety, but it is rare and not suitable for general usage because the stalks are very fragile.

A person might choose to buy black roses for herself as a symbol of a major change and the birth of a new journey in life, but black roses probably are not a good gift idea.
