About Scuba Diving in Sanibel

Sanibel Island, located off the west coast of Florida near Fort Myers, is a truly beautiful area to visit in the sunshine state. Approximately 12 miles long and 3 miles wide, Sanibel is surrounded by warm, clear blue waters that are perfect for scuba diving enthusiasts. As you cross the Sanibel Causeway (the only way to get to Sanibel), be prepared to explore the turquoise waters of adventure and underwater discoveries.

  1. Geography

    • Sanibel Island, along with neighboring Captiva Island, is located off the Florida coast and bordered by the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. These barrier islands offer numerous reefs that are located in shallow water, which is perfect for first time or new scuba divers. The area also has reefs in much deeper water for more experienced divers.
Three very popular diving areas are the Belton Johnson, Edison and Peagus/Charlie's reefs. Each offers its own view of the comings and goings of the many species of fish found that call these waters home. From nurse sharks to barracudas, the waters around the reefs are teeming with ample opportunities for observation and exploration and plenty of underwater sights perfect for taking pictures.

    Benefits

    • Scuba diving is a great sport, and if you're interested in learning how to dive safely and responsibly and become a certified diver, taking lessons from a local professional and licensed scuba instructor at a reputable scuba diving facility is the best way to start out. Experienced divers can also benefit by getting additional certifications from these facilities. There are several diving centers in Sanibel that provide this service for all levels of divers.
Additionally, a well equipped scuba center can provide the proper diving equipment for sale or rent, tank refilling and any necessary supplies for your diving adventure.

    Types

    • All of the reefs in the Sanibel Island area are artificial and comprised of sunken barges, wrecks and railroad cars, and have been enhanced by man with the addition of concrete blocks and slabs, pilings and culverts. The reefs range in depth from 12 feet to 88 feet and are anywhere from 5 to 28 miles from the island. The different range in depths provides opportunities for scuba divers who are new to the sport and may need more shallow waters to explore, while there are greater depths available for intermediate and more advanced divers.
The reefs, while providing interesting and diverse diving challenges for all levels of divers, also provide the perfect habitat for many species of fish, which keeps the waters well stocked for fishing enthusiasts, too.

    Considerations

    • Whether you're bringing your own boat or will need a rental there are several boating facilities available, including the Sanibel Marina on Sanibel Island and Jensen's Marina located on Captiva Island, that provide a variety of different types of boats to rent according to your needs and experience. Facilities also provide boat ramps and fuel stations.
If you're unfamiliar with maneuvering a boat, charter boats are also available with an experienced captain to get you to and from the reefs safely.

    Warning

    • Florida has a tropical climate and if you plan on spending extensive time in the sun, it's best to be prepared and safeguard your skin from the sun's rays with a good sunscreen. Keep yu rbody hydrated at all times.
Afternoon thunderstorms crop up quickly in Florida and even though it may seem like the storm is far away, lighting can strike from a distance. Always check weather conditions before going out on the water and be sure to listen to and heed any weather warnings once you've left the island.
Never dive alone. Know what the water conditions are regarding strong currents, red tide and shark sightings and always let someone know about your boating and diving itinerary.
Always check with your doctor before diving to ensure your body can handle temperature changes, gases and pressure.
