Browser history is a great function that some people rarely use, mainly because they don't know much about it. Browser history can be used to keep track of what people using your computer are looking at.

    Function

  1. Basic browsers have a function under the menu option titled 'History. ' The purpose of the browser history function is to maintain the path of the pages the user went to on the Internet. The history is preset with a default amount of time that is preserved. For example, the history will keep the pages visited for approximately 9 days by default. The browsers back button also uses the browser history function and works double duty, as it also keeps a list of the user downloads. The history function also allows the user to store information input by the user on contact forms or on any type of form, including passwords and credit card information.
  2. Features

  3. These settings can be change inside the preferences of each browser. The settings can also be set to display the history while surfing the Internet. It is convenient and one can return to a previously viewed page on the fly. This function is handy for research. Change the history settings on the menu under the browser title. The drop-down menu will show the preference option.
  4. Types

  5. Some browsers used by web surfers include Firefox, Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Safari and Mozilla, to name a few. Browser history settings function slightly different for each browser. The differences may include the name of the settings within the browser menu itself. For instance, in the Firefox browser, the setting option is called "Preferences." In Internet Explorer, the settings are called "Internet Options" and found under the 'Tool' menu title.
  6. Considerations

  7. There are many more types of browsers used for surfing the Internet. Each browser has a history function that can be viewed by the user. To find the settings, explore the menus at the top of the browser or follow the 'help' directions. Kids can usually learn how to get into the program and change the settings, so as a parent, it would be ideal to create a a master password. Set a master password and set the history settings and lock kids out of the option to change these functions.
  8. Benefits

  9. Avoid a privacy issues and consider this privacy option while surfing the Internet on public computers such as at a library. Be sure to ask the librarian if this option is set to keep forms and pages viewed private.
  10. Potential

  11. As a parent, one can look at the 'history' and check what the kids are looking at. Using parental settings offers added layer of protection. Using the browser history is another function parents can use to make sure kids are safe online.
