What is a Hole in One in Golf?

A hole in one is a great thrill for any golfer. Struck from the tee of a par 3, the ball usually hits about 10 feet short of the hole and then bounces or rolls in to the hole. However, on rare occasions the golf ball can go straight from the tee and right in the hole. While a hole in one is almost always a well-struck shot, it is not necessarily an indication of a golfer's skill level. Sometimes an average or even a below-average golfer can happen to get lucky with a hole in one. A greater measure of a golfer's overall skill is his consistency over a long period of time.

    1. Identification

      • It's easy to identify a hole in one on a golf course. The ball will fly high into the air from the tee and land on or near the green. It will not stop there. Instead, the ball will head straight for the hole, either bouncing or rolling. Instead of coming to a stop near the flag stick, the ball will find the bottom of the hole and stay there. The golfer may be 180, 200 or 220 yards away from the hole and not know he has struck a hole in one. If there are shadows, trees or other hazards blocking his way, he may not see the ball disappear. However, as he walks toward the green, knowing he has struck a great shot, he may come to the conclusion that the ball is in the hole when he doesn't see it on the green. Then the moment of joy comes as the golfer walks up to the hole and sees his ball at the bottom of the hole.

      Size

      • In 99 percent of all holes in one, the shot occurs on a par 3. The designers of the course are saying the golfer should reach the green in one shot and take two putts to get it into the hole. A par 3 hole can range anywhere from 130 yards to 260 yards. Most experienced golfers won't have any problem hitting the ball the required distance -- the issue is keeping it straight enough to get on the green and get near the hole. On the rarest of occasions, a superb golfer can make a hole in one on a par 4. A golfer can conceivably hit a ball 350 yards to reach a par 4 green in one shot, but more often than not if a golfer makes a hole in one on a par 4 it's a dogleg hole that has a bend to it. Instead of following the fairway, the golfer will cut across and take the straightest line to the green, which will reduce the distance. If the shot is not struck perfectly, the shot will disappear into the trees or rough, but if it is hit well, it has a chance to make it the distance and get into the hole.

      Features

      • A long slow backswing, a smooth descent into the hitting zone and a full follow through are the features of a hole in one golf swing. Those are also the features of any good golf swing. The swing that results in a hole in one is not magical -- just the results are. Many golfers play the game for 40 years. They may play 4 or 5 times a week and never get a hole in one. On other occasions, a golfer will have just learned the game and is in the process of fine-tuning his swing. He is not an expert and may never become one. Yet on any given day, he could hit an outstanding shot that could end up rolling onto the green and end up in the hole. In other words, the golfer got lucky. The best pros will say that a hole in one is largely the product of great good fortune.

      Benefits

      • Shooting a hole in one may ultimately be a lucky shot, but it almost certainly means that the golfer has hit his shot very well. Hitting a shot perfectly and getting that kind of magical result will give the golfer a major shot of adrenaline and a significant increase in his confidence level. This can only help in subsequent rounds of golf. The golfer knows he just did something that few other golfers have ever accomplished.

      History

      • While hole in ones are the result of a well-struck shot combined with a large dose of luck, some people have a greater propensity for the shot than others. A Houston golfer named Mancil Davis claims to have 51 hole in ones throughout his career. By comparison, Jack Nicklaus has made 21 aces (nickname for a hole in one) in his record-setting career, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player have 19 each while Tiger Woods has 18.
