Many people don't realize this but you can actually take control of your fertility by using natural birth control methods. Not all birth control methods are 100% effective, but hormonal and barrier methods are considered to be less risky than natural birth control options. Natural birth control methods generally work 80-95% of the time depending on the type of natural birth control method used and the commitment involved.

    Benefits

  1. Natural birth control is very beneficial for people who wish to avoid the risks associated with other forms of contraception like the pill. The pill can be risky for women who smoke or have high blood pressure. Taking the pill can also increase a woman's chance of developing blood clots, which could be life threatening.
Natural birth control is also beneficial because it can help a woman to know her fertility signals and understand how her body works. Natural birth control also helps both partners to work as a team when trying to avoid getting pregnant.
Natural birth control is very affordable. The birth control pill and other forms of contraceptive can be expensive, especially for someone who doesn't carry insurance. Even with insurance, there is usually a co-pay for the prescription which can be $10 or higher. Without insurance birth control pills and other contraceptives like the ring or
Patch can cost $30 to $80 per month.
  2. Warning

  3. Natural birth control methods do not protect a couple from sexually transmitted diseases. Dr. Toni Weschler recommends that natural birth control be used mainly for couples who are in a marital or monogamous relationship.
Natural birth control options are not as effective as drugs or chemical contraceptives. The chances of making a mistake and getting pregnant are much higher with natural birth control.
Natural birth control methods are not nearly as effective for women who don't have normal regular cycles. Women who have an irregular hormone balance can ovulate more than once during the month and it can be hard to chart fertility.
  4. Types

  5. The withdrawal method: This method of natural birth control is one of the most common. This involves a man withdrawing his penis from his partner's vagina right before he ejaculates. This method is not as effective as other charting methods because sometimes small amounts of sperm can still enter the vagina prior to ejaculation.
Cervical mucous and temperature charting: Just prior to ovulation a woman's body temperature will go up slightly. By taking her temperature on a daily basis she will know the signs of fertility and choose to abstain from sex or use some type of barrier method like condoms or a cervical cap. This method also involves charting cervical mucous consistency throughout the month. Right before ovulation the cervical mucous becomes very sticky and stringy which can help sperm to make it to their destination.
Cycle beads: Cycle beads are beads that can be purchased online. These beads help a woman to chart her cycle by arranging differing color beads for different days and avoiding sex on fertile days according to the beads. The instructions are clearly laid out yet it can take several months for a woman to know her rhythm.
Fertility computer programs: One of the types of natural birth control is fertility calculating software. Couples can use the software to chart signs of fertility and signs of non-fertility. After a woman is able to get to know her to body she will know which days are her most fertile days and she can choose to either abstain from sex or use condoms.
  6. Misconceptions

  7. Some people feel that fertility can decline in their 30s so they decide to not be as faithful or accurate with natural birth control methods. However, the reality is that not all people become less fertile as they get older. In fact some many women are more likely to have twins in their 30s because they ovulate more often. Every person is different so it is best to use the form of natural birth control that you choose faithfully unless pregnancy is desired.
Some people also think that natural birth control methods are time consuming. While this is partially true at first because of the time it takes to learn a method, once a woman knows how her body works the method is effortless and takes very little time at all.
  8. Expert Insight

  9. Dr Toni Weschler is the author of "Taking Charge of your Fertility." She has helped couples learn how to use their natural fertility signs in order to prevent of achieve pregnancy. In her book she gives detailed explanations about how to chart temperature and cervical mucous. She feels that natural birth control is a proven method that can be very effective when used faithfully and that any couple can gain control of their fertility. She says that taking the pill over the long run could result in health consequences down the road.
