Canvas replaced wood.Canvas replaced wooden panels for artists in the 13th century and survived throughout time, proving to be a substantial product for artists to paint on. Artists made their own canvases by weaving fibers together to form canvas. -
Types of canvas. There are several types of canvas made with different types of fibers, such as jute, linen, cotton and hemp fibers.
Each type of fiber can create a canvas.
For paintings, canvas comes in two forms: stretched canvas or rolled canvas. Canvas is used in practically every arena in life. -
Weaving canvas. There are hundreds of canvas products. The canvas used to make totes is 100 percent cotton canvas, unbleached and unprotected. Other uses for canvas are tents, sails, banners, floor cloths, backdrops, shoes and much more.
Each canvas product is prepared and protected differently and according to specific use. The stretched canvas used for painting is protected with acrylic or oil primer. This process is called primed. You should examine raw canvas for a painting. -
Rolled raw canvas.Choose the type of canvas needed for a painting by looking and feeling the surface of the canvas. Linen canvas is the smoothest type of canvas and will accept the paint without much texture showing under the paint. Some artists want the canvas texture to show through the painting, while others do not. Paying a lot of money for canvas is not always necessary, it is simply quicker. -
Prepare your own canvas.Stretch and prime your own raw canvas for paintings. Stretch your canvas by building a frame and stapling the unprimed or pre-primed rolled canvas onto it. Prime your own canvas by applying a product called gesso onto the canvas. The canvas can be as large, thick and smooth as desired. Weaving one's own canvas is another option and can only enhance the artist's creations. -
Creative capacity.Using unprocessed rolled canvas has a lot of possibilities. Use it to make totes, curtains, floor cloths and any number of other creative projects. Raw canvas comes in large bolts and can be stored easily until the projects manifest. Raw rolled canvas can be the best way to purchase canvas because it has so many possibilities that it can expand the creative capacity. It is cheaper and gives the artist more creative control. -
Canvas shoesPaint a masterpiece and take it to another level by weaving, priming and stretching the canvas. The process will not limit the artwork to just painting. In today's art society, weaving one's own canvas is unheard of by any individual artist. When weaving is not on the agenda the next best solution is using raw unprocessed canvas. When one is painting a painting "on the fly," stick to preprocessed canvas.
