Furniture is a term that is used to describe a wide range of different objects. For the most part, the term "furniture" refers to movable objects that serve different purposes within the home or business environment. Furniture can, however, denote an even larger scale of objects. There are many different kinds of furniture, and its history is one that dates back into prehistory.

From Quick Guide: All About Furniture

    Types

  1. There are literally dozens of different types of furniture. The basic types of furniture are categorized on the basis of function. Furniture that is made for storage includes furniture types such as cabinets, wardrobes and bookcases. Furniture that is meant to provide seating includes couches, benches and recliners, along with many other types. There are also furniture types that are meant to provide a surface of some kind, such as tables, and furniture that is meant to provide a place to sleep, like beds. Along with these common categories, however, there are many other types of furniture that simply don't lend themselves to categorization.
  2. Function

  3. Most furniture is meant to provide functionality in at least two areas: as decorative art and as a sort of functioning hardware. Bedroom sets, for example, are meant to be aesthetically pleasing and to improve the look and feel of the bedroom into which they're placed. It is equally important, however, that such furniture serves its functional purpose of providing comfort and making the room livable. It can often be a battle for consumers to find furniture that meets both of these conditions and balances both well.
  4. History

  5. Furniture has existed, it seems, virtually as long as human beings have. There are examples that have been unearthed and excavated in recent times of stone furniture that was created thousands of years ago, well before recorded history begins. As soon as human beings were able to utilize tools, they began to use those tools to form their environment into one that was more comfortable and that made it easier for them to survive. Some of the earliest pieces of furniture to be uncovered were beds and tables, both of which were easily made from stone.
  6. Considerations

  7. For modern consumers who are contemplating the purchase of new furniture, there are many different aspects that need to be taken into consideration. Price is probably the foremost consideration that weighs on the mind of the average consumer. Along with price, however, other important considerations include the size of the furniture, its style, functionality, durability and any applicable warranties.
  8. Potential

  9. Of course, furniture, like everything else, is constantly evolving. In the last century, there have been dozens of improvements and twists on classical furniture types. For example, there are now beds that support people using mattresses filled with water, air and high-tech memory-foams, along with dozens of other materials. There are beds that vibrate, ones that can adjust positions and beds the firmness of which can be adjusted at the touch of a button. All of these evolutionary bed types are new and are indicative of the sort of rapid change that furniture has generally undergone in recent times. It can only be assumed that such development and change will continue into the future and that furniture will continue to improve and evolve over time.
