About Bakery Businesses

The lifeblood of the American economy is small businesses. Each day, thousands of Americans start their own businesses. A bakery business is one of the easiest businesses to start, and it can be one of the most rewarding.

  1. Identification

    • A bakery business is a business that sells baked goods such as cakes, cupcakes, breads and cookies. A bakery business can be set up as a storefront operation that sells baked goods at retail to the public or it can be set up to sell baked goods at wholesale to stores and restaurants. It is even possible to set up an operation that uses a combination of the two. One thing that makes opening a bakery business one of the easiest businesses to start up is that you can start a bakery business from your home. This allows you to start small and expand as your business grows.

    Types

    • There are several types of bakery businesses. Small retail bakeries are often small stores that specialize in a specific baked product, such as birthday cakes, while offering other baked goods on a smaller scale. Many large grocery and chain stores have in-store bakeries that provide cookies, cakes and other baked goods to their customers. Medium-sized retail bakeries often supply baked goods at retail to the public and at wholesale to other businesses. This combination of wholesale and retail is often very successful.
Some retail bakeries specialize in one type of product, such as wedding cakes or cheesecakes. While still others specialize in doughnuts. Doughnut shops are often open 24 hours a day and serve doughnuts and coffee. Many specialty bakeries (cheesecakes, doughnuts, wedding cakes) offer franchise opportunities, which is a great way to start a business. Most people starting a franchise receive training, business plans and support from the franchisee.
The high demand for prepared baked goods has provided the need for wholesale plants. These plants bake goods in large volumes and wholesale the products to grocery and chain stores. Wholesale bakery plants offer a wide variety of baked goods including breads, cookies, cakes, and snack cakes.

    Benefits

    • One of the main benefits of starting a bakery business is that this is one of the easiest and cost-efficient start-up business. If you have an idea, or are famous for, a certain baked treat, you can turn your culinary art into a successful business. A bakery business can be started from your home - with the ingredients for your specialty. It is easy to begin by selling baked goods to your neighbors and friends, and in most cases, by word of mouth, the business will begin to grow. Once you begin making money, you should invest some of it into advertising and marketing, and as your business grows, you can expand to a retail store. Being your own boss is very rewarding, but is also very demanding, especially in the beginning.

    Considerations

    • When starting any business, it is important to know what type licenses are required. Almost every area requires a basic business license. These are usually inexpensive and can be obtained at the city hall or county seat. Business that involve preparing and selling food items are also required to obtain a food vending license. In most cases, this involves an inspection by the health department ensuring that the work area complies with the laws and regulations governing food preparation.

    Potential

    • Although there has been much in the news about the growing problem of obesity, a bakery business still has the potential to play an important role in the commercial world. Many bakeries are beginning to provide more healthful baked goods along with the standard sweet offerings. There is the potential for a successful baking business in every neighborhood.
