When you open up that invitation to a black-tie affair, it is not uncommon to have a bit of anxiety. A black-tie affair is not something people get to do every day and you may question what to wear, how to engage in appropriate conversations and how to use the correct etiquette during dinner. Black-tie affairs, however, are supposed to be fun and are when you feel prepared, relaxed and ready to enjoy the event.

    Misconceptions

  1. Black-tie affairs don't necessarily mean you have to wear a black tie and tails or that a woman must wear a formal gown. For many, it just means you need to look your very best. When in doubt, ask the person throwing the party.
Black-tie affairs are not relegated only to parties. Certain entertainment venues are black-tie affairs as well. This includes opera and ballet performances. Depending on where you live, these rules are increasingly ignored.
  2. Features

  3. Black-tie affairs are ruled by tradition and etiquette, which are ruled by geographic region and social status. This means there will be many variations when it comes to clothing and etiquette. On a basic level, you can expect the following.
In most cases, black-tie invitations almost always have the words "black tie" printed on the invitation.
Attire for men will include a jacket and tie. This usually means a full suit or even a tuxedo. For women, a dress should be dressy, but can be any length. The later in the day the event is, the longer the dress should be, though short dresses are often acceptable.
Black-tie affairs are most typically for adults with the exception of a wedding. Children at black-tie weddings are expected to dress up, but not to the degree of their parents.
Formal attire also dictates formal behavior. Along with your best clothes, as a black-tie invitee, you should also be on your best behavior and use the rules of proper etiquette.
  4. History of

  5. Black-tie affairs date back to the 1700s when aristocrats would try to outdo each other by wearing the most extravagant clothes they could find. After the French Revolution, where commoners rebelled against the rich ruling class, the bright and colorful outfits were replaced by black and more subdued versions of the same. Black formal attire remained popular through the Industrial Revolution as soot from smokestacks would not show on black clothing. There was also a year-long royal mandate following the death of Queen Victoria's husband in 1861 that people were to wear black. Another historical movement that affected black-tie attire was the Protestant movement, which dictated that rich men dress more conservatively. Rich men mocked this movement and transferred the adornment that they typically wore to their wives in the form of beautiful gowns and jewels.
  6. Evolution

  7. There was a time when dinner, even in your own home, was a black-tie affair. Each decade since the 1900s has seen a slight relaxing in formality and therefore in evening wear. Black ties and formal wear have gone through many transformations and these formalities slowly moved from daily occasions to special occasions only. As late as the 1980s people wore formal clothes on a regular occasion for most evening parties and the theater. However, black tie became strictly optional even at the most special occasions in the 1990s. It was not unusual for people to show up at a wedding in jeans and a bolo tie or to an opera in a shirt and tie. However, black-tie affairs will not become extinct because special occasions and events are a great reason for civilized men and women to wear their best classic evening wear and fashion trends come and go throughout the years.
  8. Significance

  9. Black-tie affairs mark significant life events. Celebrations and coming of age ceremonies such as debutante balls, sweet sixteen parties, bar mitzvahs and bat mitzvahs are always black-tie affairs. Also, proms, weddings, anniversaries and even some birthday parties are this formal. In short, black-tie affairs celebrate life and successes and make memories that will last a lifetime.
