A consignment shop is a store that sells used clothes, furniture and household items. People bring in items they no longer need and wish to sell. The consignment shop collects the items and then prices them to sell to the public. A portion of the sale goes to the seller, the other portion to the consignment shop owner. Selling clothing at a consignment shop is a good way to recycle items as well as earn cash.

Consignment shops began to gain popularity in the late 1960s and have changed in several ways since then. They have evolved from stores that were run out of homes and flea markets to shops that reside in almost every town around the world. The early years of consignment shopping got off to a rocky start due to items that were in poor condition or not appealing to customers. The 1990s brought a fresh face to the consignment industry with the introduction of large retail secondhand stores such as Savers and Ebay. Smaller secondhand stores took the secondhand industry to a new level by allowing people to make cash off their donations, making consignment stores a sought-after place to acquire clothing and household items.

There are two ways consignment shops can help the consumer and themselves make money. Many stores offer upfront payment for household items and clothes; they will inspect the items and tell the seller whether they can use the items for resale and whether they can they hand them cash on the spot. One popular consignment shop that offers this form of resale is Plato's Closet. The most popular consignment shops are where the seller drops off clothing to resell and the consignment shop places the clothes on the rack. As the items sell, a portion of the funds are set aside and given to the seller on a given date.

There are many items that can be sold at consignment shops, such as vintage clothing, shoes and party gowns. Slightly used furniture is also a popular item. Appliances can also be sold at consignment stores, making this a less expensive option for some. Antique items are very popular in the consignment shop industry and can be quite profitable for both the seller and the consignment store owner. Some consignment shops focus on age groups, such as exclusively selling baby items or items geared toward teens. Used sports equipment is also a popular selling group.

One benefit to shopping or selling at a consignment shop is that one-of-a-kind items, either obsolete or discontinued in retail stores, can be found. Many consignment shop seekers look for Items that carry character such as old toys or antique items that they collect or used to collect. Many times one can find such out-of-production items such as fine china or a Barbie doll collection.

  9. Map
    Map
Consignment shops are located all over the world. From the United States to the United Kingdom, there is a consignment shop on almost every street in every large town. Many people in some smaller towns rely heavily on their consignment shop to make ends meet. Areas where tourists are prevalent, such as Honolulu, Nassau and Orlando, is also a popular location for consignment shops.
  10. Misconceptions

  11. Designer purse

Consignment shops should not be confused with resale shops. Resale shops accept donations only and do not give cash back to the donors. Many people think consignment shops sell only junky items, but some sell only high-end designer items or items that are in very good condition. They can reject items that are in poor shape or that show excessive wear.
