It has been 10 years since Viagra hit the market and helped men with erectile dysfunction improve their sex lives drastically. Since then, the drug has been found to have many other positive effects on men, women and even animals (hamsters). This article discusses those positive benefits, with a focus on the positive enhancements for men.

    Benefits

  1. The most popular--and most intended use of Viagra--is its impact on improving the sex life of men who have erectile dysfunction. Initially targeted for older men who suffered from erectile dysfunction, the drug has now been shown to help improve the sex lives of people who suffer from depression or even diabetes. Viagra has also been found to be useful in treating people with pulmonary hypertension, or an increased blood pressure in the pulmonary artery. Viagra reduces the stress of the arteries in the chest, improving blood circulation and lowering blood pressure. Two studies were released that found that Viagra has a positive impact on curbing altitude sickness for those who are traveling on airplanes. Some professional athletes have recently turned to Viagra as a form of performance-enhancing drug. Athletes believe that it improves endurance, improves the body's oxygen flow and reverses the erectile dysfunction that steroids sometimes cause.
  2. The Facts

  3. Viagra is available as a prescription drug in pill form. The scientific drug is called Sildenafil, and works by increasing blood flow to the penis, causing an erection. It comes in 25mg to 100mg doses. Other drugs that work similarly are Levitra and Cialis, which use similar chemical compounds to achieve the same end result.
  4. Time Frame

  5. Viagra should be taken some time between four hours and thirty minutes before engaging in sexual intercourse. Viagra should not be taken more than once a day, and if erections last more than a few hours, you should contact a physician. Viagra is not available as an over-the-counter medicine, so you will first need to get a prescription from your doctor. If Viagra is not right for you for whatever reason, you may want to look in to a prescription of one of Viagra's two other top competitors.
  6. History of

  7. Viagra came out as a drug to help treat erectile dysfunction in 1996. It was approved by the FDA in 1998 and has remained the top erectile dysfunction medicine since its inception. Though other drugs such as Cialis or Levitra have hit the market since, Viagra has become a household name and continues to maintain its dominance in the erectile dysfunction medicine market, accounting for roughly 50 percent of erectile dysfunction drugs, down from 92 percent in 2000, before Cialis and Levitra.
  8. Risk Factors

  9. Viagra is not safe for consumption for people suffering various health conditions, such as low blood pressure, recent stroke or heart attack or decreased liver function. Some people have suffered side effects such as headaches, hearing loss and hypotension.
