About Computers

Computers are improving so quickly that consumers can't keep up. Just as soon as you get used to the desktop in your office, you are inundated with ads telling you that yours is now obsolete. Whatever the case may be, computers are here to stay. Consumers will be better equipped to keep up with the changing computer technology by learning all they can about computers. At the home or office, computers are an integral part of life.

From Quick Guide: Use a Computer Basics

    The Facts

  1. To know the facts about computers is to gain some knowledge of how they work. The first fact to know is that a computer is nothing without a processing chip. This is where all the 1s and 0s change into images we see on the monitor. The other main fact to know is how the hard drive and the Random Access Memory (RAM) work together. The hard drive stores the information and the RAM stores just enough of the information to process the operator's commands. With a working knowledge of these facts, you will better understand how computers work.
  2. Benefits

  3. The efficiency and production in industry skyrocketed with the advent of the computer. It is hard to image life without them. Look around while you're shopping, they are helping people deal with everyday life on an ongoing basis. Lights, gas, water and even groceries are all produced by computers. Some benefits on a more personal level are staying in touch with loved ones via the Internet, record keeping and even relaxation and entertainment with computer games.
  4. Type

  5. Laptops, desktops and palm-held computers are some of the titles given to computers to distinguish them from others. However, the types of computers can be relegated to two. The hybrid and the analog. The analog is a computer that does what its name implies: computations. It will actually do this faster than a hybrid, but beyond that, they are useless. The hybrid couples the analog with a digital computer and is generally referred to as a digital computer.
  6. Function

  7. There are four main functions of a computer. The most obvious would be processing. The speed of the processor chip in a computer contributes to the next function of the computer: the output. This is what you print, play or see on the screen. However, a computer cannot have an output without input. The input function of the computer is used by two people: the one who built it and the one who uses it. Loading, or inputting, programs customize the functions of a computer for specific needs. The final function is to provide storage. Although the hard drives are large, it is wise to have an alternate source to store important information. A flash drive or external hard drive are the two most popular methods to do this.
  8. Misconceptions

  9. One of the common misconceptions of a computer is the more it costs, the better it is. While there is some truth in that statement, the real question is, are you buying more than you need? Unless you are starting a business that needs a super conductor chip, spending a lot of money on a computer does not mean you couldn't get the same quality in a lesser priced model. The key is to get only what you need.
