A blog, or a weblog, is an online journal or diary that is updated frequently by the blog's author. Blogs can be used for personal or business purposes and the blog's settings are controlled by the blog author. Because blog space is often free, blogs have become a great marketing tool for businesses.

    The Facts

  1. In recent years, blogs have become a huge part of the Internet. Just about anyone can start their own blog, about any subject they desire. Entries are posted in reverse chronological order and should include a title, date and the time the blog was posted. This makes it easy for readers to find the blog post(s) they are looking for. In recent years, blogs have also become a huge marketing and promotional tool, providing business owners with a cheap (often free) way to promote their business and products.
  2. Function

  3. Blogs are an important communication tool. They can be used as a way to update family and friends on life events, or they can be used for business purposes. Blogs are often used for fundraising events as well. There are also many blog sites that provide updates on news and celebrities. Most blog sites provide templates for users to work from. Using a template can give even a novice's blog a professional look.
  4. Benefits

  5. Because most blog space is free, blogging is an easy and affordable way to communicate. While the bloggers target audience may be big or small, any public blog has the potential to reach millions of people. Blog publishing can be done instantly, so updates can be posted extremely fast. A blog can be used as a way to broadcast family updates, post pictures, or, in the case of some of the social blogging sites, blogs can be a way to meet people with common interests. Links to advertisements can also be put on blogs, as well as affiliate links, which enable the blog owner to earn money based on the number of clicks their blog gets.
  6. Type

  7. There are many free blog sites available. Some of the most popular sites include Blogger.com, Wordpress.com., Livejournal.com and Myspace.com. Each of these sites offer different options for the blogger to customize their blog pages.
  8. Risk Factors

  9. Blog writers should be wary about putting too much of their personal information on their blog site, because anyone with Internet access may be able to access their blog. Bloggers should be especially careful about posting personal photographs and copyrighted material on their blog site. Some blog sites, like Livejournal.com and Myspace.com, have features to allow blogs to be kept private; in this case, the blog can only be accessed by the author's approved friends.
Authors should also consider the blog's Comments function. The comments feature can usually be disabled if the blog author doesn't want comments from users to be posted without the blog owner's approval. A wide-open comments policy can result in spam and sometimes off-color comments. For safety and privacy reasons, many bloggers choose to post anonymously.
