"JOEL SIEGEL: All right. So we've got our beat. It sounded good so far. Okay? So what I want to talk about is this guy is basically doing a couple of variations and he's kind of framing it in--like a phrasing of two bars. Okay? So a bar is the same thing as a measure. Those are synonyms. And a measure is four beats. All right? So two measures sounds like: one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four. Okay? So those are two measures and two bars. Okay? At the end of every second bar, he's kind of throwing in not quite--it's not really a fill necessarily, 'cause usually you think of fills as a little more ornate. These are just kind of like little tasty kind of--in jazz, you might call it comping. But it's just like little ghost notes or little like kind of small fills that he's throwing at the end of every two bars. I'll play it and see if you hear what I mean. So listen at the end of every second bar, hear what I'm playing. Okay? So he's got--he's doing two different things. And he kinda goes back and forth at least between those flavors. He's not playing the exact same thing every time but those are the two kind of ideas that he's working with. So the first one, we'll talk about real quickly 'cause it's not too complex. You just have eighth notes in the left hand. You have the upbeat of three going into four--okay--in that second bar. So just the snare, it sounds like this: two, three, four. All right? I'll do it again. Okay? Mechanically, what's happening is just your right hand and your left hand are lining up, and on that beat four you're also--you got that quarter note and also the kick. So it's coming through as well. It sounds like this. All right? Take a look at the next clip, we'll talk about that other fill that he's doing at the end of the second bar."
